Riding a bike is one way to save on gas and go green, but one Manoa bike group is hoping to make it easier and cheaper for University of Hawaii students to get around.

Cycle Manoa set up a tent on the Manoa campus to buy bikes from students at $20 a bike.

Freshman Sarah Cutts from Olinda, Maui, said it is a good deal. She said it is a way to help especially since the university refuses to store dormitory students' bikes in the summer.

"I figure if I am going to get 20 bucks for my bike instead of leaving it having it stolen, this is a lot better because you get paid for it. You don't just lose your bike, and you can put this toward getting a new bike next semester," Cutts said.

Sophomore Shane Milek was glad they accepted his bike even with a tire missing.

"They pay $20 and I needed the money. I guess and I have another bike so I thought I would give it away," Milek said.

Cycle Manoa received a $2,200 grant from the UH Students Association to start the bike project.

"The broad goal is to promote biking promote biking in Hawaii, promote biking on this campus," said Daniel Alexander of Cycle Manoa.

The group said it knew it could tap into a ready supply of bikes.

"A tremendous amount of bicycles get left at the end of every semester and these things basically go to waste," Alexander said.

Volunteers will spend summer repairing the donated bikes hoping to have them ready to give out to students when they return in the fall.

Bikes will be sold to interested students for only $15. The $15 covers the city's bike registration and license fee.
