Park superintendent Cindy Orlando announced that Hawaii Volcanoes National Park would reopen at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Orlando said east to northeast trade winds have returned to the area and all park programs and activities would return to normal operations, including the Volcano House and Kilauea Military Camp, KITV reported.

Officials said they were waiting for a change in wind direction to blow away sulfur dioxide belching from Kilauea volcano.

The National Park Service said air conditions were so bad on Wednesday that 2,000 people were evacuated from the park.

Big Island residents living in communities outside the park are advised to remain alert to the possibility of worsening conditions in their areas.

A Red Cross emergency shelter was closed on Thursday after six people spent the night to avoid the sulfur dioxide fumes.
