The Hawaii Superferry is once again open for business after nearly two months in dry dock.

The Superferry left Honolulu Harbor for Kahului, Maui, at 6:30 a.m. Monday. It was the first time the ferry carried passengers to the Valley Isle since February when it was forced to go into dry dock for repairs to its rudder. While there, the ship's hull was damaged, putting the Superferry out of business for weeks.

The ferry's return came exactly one week after Aloha Airlines shut down its passenger service, leaving a gap in service for travelers wanting to get from one island to another.

Superferry officials said the ferry's return this week is purely coincidental; repairs were completed two weeks earlier than scheduled.

"Our timing had nothing to do with the unfortunate closure of Aloha. Our goal has always been to get the ship back in the water and begin service as soon as possible," Director of Business Development Terry O'Halloran said.

While passenger loads were unsurprisingly light on the first day of service, Superferry officials said they hope consistent service and the need for more interisland travel options will help rebuild its customer base.

Some stranded Aloha Airlines passengers sailed the Superferry to Honolulu, hoping to improve their chances of getting back to the mainland sooner.

"We couldn't find a flight back home," said California tourist Long Pham.

The Superferry is extending its special one-way fares for both passengers and vehicles through June 5.

A second ship is being built in Alabama. It is expected to begin service to the Big Island early next year.
