Critics Still Upset Over Kaiulani Movie

Producers Say Criticisms Unfounded

Hawaii's Princess Kaiulani died at 23, but now some Hawaiians are fighting over her legacy.

Kaiulanai is beloved by many for struggling to empower Hawaiians during the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893, but some Hawaiians are upset about a filmmakers attempt to tell her story.

Upset Hawaiians said the film takes too many liberties with Kaiulani's life, cheapening her story.

"They have added a love story that never could have possibly existed," said a concerned Hawaiian. "It never would have been allowed in those days -- in a Victorian time."

Producers said the $7 million film has been worked and reworked to address objections, but added that it is a work of fiction.

"It was never intended to be a documentary. It is a drama and the important thing here is we are getting this story what happened here in Hawaii out," said Leilani Forby, executive produce and wife to director Marc Forby. "I grew up here, and I know how important it is to people."

Forby, a Kailua High graduate, said workers are preparing for filming to begin at Iolani Palace.

Hawaiians also expressed concern about possible damage to the historic palace, especially with all the filming equipment.

Officials at the palace, however, said that every precaution would be taken to protect the palace.

Despite the fact that Forby said they would try to address all concerns and the palace will be well cared for, some critics said they would be on the palace grounds protesting.
