Prosecutors Show Shopping Photos In Murder TrialPurchases Include Shovel, Duct Tape, Garbage Bags, FlashlightPOSTED: 8:26 pm HST March 10,
2008 HONOLULU -- Honolulu prosecutors on Monday presented surveillance photos of a murder suspect on two highly-suspicious shopping sprees. The video shows Kirk Lankford in the process of trying to dispose of the body of a young woman, prosecutors said.Lankford left full-color, digital, time-stamped tracks for a man who was hiding a murder, prosecutors said.He could be seen holding a shovel at the Iwilei Home Depot at 10:16 p.m. on April 12, 12 hours after Masumi Watanabe, 21, was last seen alive on her daily walk at Pupukea.Lankford paid about $62 in cash for the shovel, duct tape, contractors-size garbage bags and a flashlight, all of which he had later when a witness spotted him digging a hole on the North Shore. There were more pictures from the Foodland at Pupukea. That time he was shopping within an hour of Watanabe's disappearance. Lankford was buying bags, paper towels and cleaning liquid containing bleach. However suspicious they look Lankford's suspicious shopping habits do not prove murder, but they could have a powerful impact on the jury, KITV reported.Lankford's defense strategy remains secret. If he later claims he killed Watanabe by accident, his denials afterward will not help such as the time he spoke on the phone to a detective, two days after the disappearance."I asked him again, 'Are you sure you hadn't seen any Japanese female walking in that area? And he said, 'No,'" Detective Jill Kaui said.Trial continues later in the week.Lankford remains in custody on $1 million bail.
