UH Manoa Receives Wind Power TurbineSchool Hopes To Generate Alternative Energy MomentumPOSTED: 12:33 pm HST March 10,
2008 HONOLULU -- A lot focus is being put on renewable energies recently, and the University of Hawaii wants to be part of the growing "going green" movement.UH Manoa now has a new energy-generating wind turbine. It is on the top floor of Saunders Hall. The turbine is bird-friendly and silent, officials said. The Energy Management Group donated the turbine."It gives the students an opportunity to learn about how wind energy can contribute to our renewable energy regime," Energy Management Group President Richard Filiuzzi said."Once we prove that this technology works and it's spinning and people are seeing the energy it produces, they'll be inspired to hopefully tap in to wind resource and all the other renewables that are around us. So, we're really excited about it," UH student coordinator Shanah Trevenna said.If the wind blows a steady 15 mph for an hour, the turbine would produce approximately 500 watts, according to the president of Energy Management Group.UH officials said the school targeted 2020 as the year for the school to generate 25 percent of its electricity from renewable sources. They hope to reach total energy independence by 2050, according to UH. Copyright 2008 by KITV.com All rights reserved.
