HONOLULU -- The price of gas hit a record high in the state Friday and some prospective car buyers are taking the cost to heart. The price of unleaded gas at one service station in Wailiku Maui was $3.96, and premium was a staggering $4.16.At a couple of stations on King Street in Honolulu, unleaded hovered at $3.47, a hair under the statewide average of $3.50.
As prices inch up, motorists are taking notice, changing habits and in some cases changing cars.At the new car show, potential buyers said fuel economy is definitely high on the list for a new car."I'm definitely staying away from the gas guzzlers," said one prospective buyer. Many smaller, fuel-efficient cars were getting the once over by drivers of all ages for their small sticker price and higher gas mileage.Car show workers said hybrids were also drawing buyers."People are going with hybrids these days. Those are the best to go with; other than that you spend $50 to $60 a week on gas," said a show official. Many drivers said they are driving older model cars, which have served them well, but with the gas prices on the rise and no relief at the pump in sight, they're looking to save money in the long run.
