"THIS IS A DISGRACE .... UNBELIEVEABLE .. THEY DO THIS TO A PUPPY WHAT ELSE DO THEY DO.. SERVING OUR COUNTRY FOR WHAT.... THIS SOLDIER SHOULD BE SHOT TOSSED TOO ..... WHAT A BIG MAN HE IS TAKING IT OUT ON A PUPPY FOR GOD SAKE...

I AM ABSOLUTELY EMBARRASSED THAT HE IS REPRESENTING MY COUNTRY... WHAT A DISGUSTING HUMAN BEING..."

"It is intolerable that a U.S. Marine should engage in a horrifying act of animal abuse with such a smug look of indifference--or even satisfaction.

Is the life of a healthy, living being so irrelevant to a U.S. Marine that killing for the sake of killing has become a casual, enjoyable act?

What happened to protecting life instead of destroying it? "

- Dr. Cory Wade
San Jose, California

"I hope the media follows up with this and lets the public know exactly what happened to the Marine that did this horrible act."

- viewer

"if you think that video was bad search under US soldier tosses iraq boy off small bridge and i don"t think he was reprimened"

- Marina

"Marine should be put in prison from at least two years from doing what he did."

- Herb

"I wanted to blog the following articles, and this email came up. This is certainly no tip, as the address infers. Pleased direct accordingly, thank you.

As to the marine who threw the puppy over the cliff, I have a little dog, knowing what she would feel if that were done to her. Anyone who would do this is just as sick as someone who would throw a human being off a cliff. I would hope that the Marine Corps would give him the punishment due him, which would be a dishonorable discharge from the Marine Corps. What marine would want him to remain? If he could do that, he is capable of other heinous crimes. I'm glad I didn't see the video on Tube. It was bad enough just knowing the story, not to forget either marine's smiling faces

With reference to the man who laid on his wife and suffocated her, twenty years is not enough time for him to spend in prison. If one takes another's life, he/she should be prepared to sacrifice their own. What a tragic story. My sympathy goes out to her family, knowing that this is of little help. I just want them to know that I care................"

"aside from making me physically ill seeing this defenseless dog tossed over a cliff like garbage, all i can think is, only a jarhead marine would pull a stunt like this. so was the dog a threat to someone's life or a threat to the U.S.?

- Joan

"I just wanted to react to the article and its video I found on YouTube. I think it is horrendous and outrageously upsetting what I saw on that video clip. If this is what the taxpayers money is funding, marines abusing and possibly murdering animals in their spare time, they should be discharged and let those that really want to put forth effort to making this world safer go to the middle east. Of all things, throwing a defenseless puppy, what is going on?? As the tears welled up in my eyes for that poor creature, I just felt the need to react to someone. Thank you for listening to the ranting of a reader."

-M

"I am utterly outraged by this atrocity. All of the Marines who took part in this craziness should be severely punished. Not just the one holding the puppy. This includes the person holding the camera as well as the other Marine smiling in the video and anyone else who stood by and witnessed this act of violence. I cannot believe that not one other Marine stepped in to stop this sicking event. The war is bad enough. We don't need people like this defending our country. SEND THEM HOME VIA DISHONORABLE DECHARGE! These Marines have caused irreparable damage to the Marine Corp's image and to the United States' image. Our contry's image around the world has been tarnished enough. These Marines make me SICK! Cruelty to animals is how serial killers get their start. Is this Marine getting the same sort of euphoric feeling that a serial killer would experience during a murder? What shame they have brought on their families as well."

- Karen

"Everyone is bashing this guy and saying how terrible he is and yes, what he did is terrible if he did indeed do it. But think of it this way, you send a guy over to country where there is less regard for life and you tell him, kill these people, they are bad. Oh and don't let the things you see and people trying to blow you up bother you at all. The poor guy is away from his family and everything he knows having people trying to kill him and having to kill others. 95% of Americans can't even comprehend what that is like or the mindset it puts you in. He is in a bad place, in a bad situation. It will affect him, and people should not be so quick to judge him based on the fact that he is in an environment inconceivable to the average person. Should he be punished? yes. Should he be persecuted? Absolutely not. I feel badly for the poor animal but animals die every day chained up in someones back yard, it's a fact of life. He made a terrible mistake and the effect on his conscience will be his worst punishment."

- Neal

"If in fact, these marines, did throw the puppy off the cliff, I would ask that they be taken and thrown off the cliff, as well. I would be more than happy to take my hands and throw all of them off. How DARE they? This is the conduct of people that are suppose to serve and protect, AND they’re laughing on the video to boot. IF these people are guilty of such an atrocity, I am pleading with you they be punished as this poor, innocent little puppy was punished. People like this do NOT deserve to be walking on the face of this earth, nevermind be a member of the US Marines. They have exhibited the most inhumane, cowardly act and they call themselves marines. They are SICK COWARDS and I for one would like to kill them. This is the most disgusting cowardly act I have ever seen and am truly sick over it. The Marines had better do the right thing and punish these cowardly bastards. I would also like to know if any of them have a pet."

- Thank you,
Fran Mesnick
New York City

"This is deplorable and disgusting maybe someone should throw the Marine off the cliff, to do this to an innocent animal no less a puppy. Someone do something"

- Joanne

"As you all know the United States Marines Corps on Tuesday condemned a video that purportedly shows a Marine viciously mistreating a puppy and promised an aggressive investigation into who is responsible.

I feel this video shows a deprived man and therefore should be prosecuted; I feel it would be just to see one of his love one’s treated the same while he looks on.

As to the video being "staged, not real or edited" is a bunch of bull. Obviously, whomever is saying this did not have their sound on. This is outrageous!!! Deplorable!!!!!!!! These men should be court-martialed or thrown over the cliff too!!!! They must be found and prosecuted!!!!"

- Trish

"This is a very sick and disgusting act committed by one of our marines. You would think that he has seen enough sick and disgusting acts while serving in Iraq. If this marine was following orders then why is he smiling. I don’t believe it. Orders can be followed without a smile on your face. And if this puppy had rabies or something else there are humane ways to destroy this defenseless animal. Please do not let this go and please follow up on this story. I can only pray to god that this is not true and it turns out to be a hoax. If it is true then this marine should be court-martialed and sentenced to prison just as Michael Vick was. Obviously he has a mental illness (hoax or not) and I fear he could commit sick and disgusting acts on humans."

- Gwen

"I hate this man. He should have been handed over to the insurgents, Im ashamed by him wearing our uniform out there. This is no man or Marine, he is a coward."

- William Duque B.S.

"That Marine's complete disregard for life by throwing the puppy off the cliff is despicable and evil. Please don't let this story go! Please continue to report on it and let the world know how the Marine is being held accountable AND how the Marine's are being held accountable to punish a member of their own for such inhumane actions. How people treat animals is an accurate representation of how they treat other people, and as citizens we should not take this lightly.

I truly believe that unless the media hold the Marine's accountable through their continued reporting of the story that the Marines will be way to light in punishment."

- Nicole

"I am ashamed to be an American today, this guy is not like the Marines I know. I was in the Army and saw battle but still had my morals and would never kill a defenseless puppy. Dishonorable."

-Ricardo Colon

"That is one sick soldier! Is he getting treatment for his mental deficiencies? How did this guy get accepted as a Marine? If this is indicative of the type of soldier we have serving in the United States Marine Corps, God Save Us All!

- viewer

"To Whom It May Concern:

I find it absolutely inexcusable and distressing to see what that U.S. Marine seems to be doing with the helpless puppy in the video that was posted today found at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21134540/vp/23465732#23465732. I also find it atrocious that you would stoop to the level of actually feature the video on this website. Do we not all recall the horrendous actions that Michael Vick took toward innocent dogs? There is no need to further perpetuate the indecent acts that human beings take against animals that cannot protect themselves. You should be ashamed of your organization for enabling these sick individuals to gain more ideas for their acts of cruelty. In my opinion, cruelty to animals is the same as cruelty to human beings. I think that these people would think twice if they were to receive the same punishment as the dog that was thrown to his death or the numerous dogs that were electrocuted and drowned like those owned by Michael Vick. Report the news, don't aid in the sick actions of people."

- Kealy Wilson

"Hi! saw this story on the news last night, then saw it on CNN on the Internet with a link to your station. Would you please follow up on this with the Marines. Don't let this go. This has really made me sick. Really. Hoax or real...it's just about the sickest thing I have ever seen. I really hope our soldiers are not treating the civilians this way. The other thing that concerns me and that should concern all of us is the way the world views our soldiers after seeing something like this.

Thanks for your attention to this matter."

-Mark Johnson, Laguna Niguel, CA

"If, indeed, the marine in question threw a helpless puppy off a cliff then I hope someone takes him out and throws his sorry butt off a cliff. Horrifying. Absolutely horrifying."

- Sandra Griffett

"I wish stories like yours would better explain the real issue. It matters not if the puppy were real, alive, or dead. The video shows a deplorable act, and outside of someone filming a "movie" which would have registered itself as such, and would have disclaimers.. the video would have the potential to be seen in the wrong light. This alone should have given those people cause to *NOT* do something so careless toward how it would reflect on them and their view of life ... as they simulate this act on what they would have people believe is a real animal.. so should they be punished as if their act *HAD BEEN* on a real, live, animal.. THUS they learn the lesson not to act crudely to life in any form."

- Robert

"I just read this article on the web. And I have to say, what the Marines are telling the public is totally laughable. Let me tell you my story.

I am the proud mother of four sons. The oldest, a Navy medic, served 2 tours in Iraq. The second, a Marine communication specialist, also served 2 tours in Iraq. My third, Texas National Guard infantryman, served 1 year in Kosovo and is now finishing up a 1 year tour in Iraq. My youngest is at home still in school. I am proud of all my sons and the decisions they made to serve our country.

USA Today did a story when my oldest son was in Iraq about him and one of his buddies adopting a stray. It was their way of making the situation they were in a little more tolerable. He told me about the story, but what took him a very long time to tell me was the day after the story was published he and his buddy were ordered to destroy the dog.

The Marines consider any occupant of a "hostile country" the enemy and should be treated as such. If the video is a hoax, we can only hope the puppy was not injured. However, with the experience my family encountered, that Marine was more than likely following orders.

Please don't make judgements until the entire story is uncovered."

- Shelly Lerch, Texas

"I'm absolutely positively HORRIFIED by this story! The marines had better act quickly and strongly to this report! Even if this video is a hoax, it's a vicious, cruel joke, and animal abuse in any sense can NOT be ignored. If it IS real, this marine needs to be dishonorably discharged with no pension and jailed for animal abuse! Horrible!

It's a well-documented fact that someone that abuses animals almost always graduates to abusing humans. Could someone feel so bad about themselves to feel they need to do such an unbelievable thing to make themselves feel better?

- Amanda Ladyha

"Asinine subject, we worry more about animals in time of war instead of the lives of the Marines. This animal could have been infected with rabies. Come on [media] stop getting your individual fame. Our Marines are at war."

- Geraldo Gapol

"This marine needs to be found, kicked out of the service and tried for animal cruelty. I have never in my fourty years seen, such a blatant disregard for life. And this is who we trust to keep our country safe! Maybe someone should through this Marine off a cliff!!!"

- Tom

"Please make sure this so-called Marine is Dishonorably Discharged and get can never say that he was a Marine. Mental illness is everywhere, but the Marine Corp doesn't need anyone like this!!! Give this so-called Marine the maximum penalty under the law!!!"

- Barbara Pasqua, Uniontown, PA

"The marine and puppy video is still up on you tube. It is very upsetting. I hope you follow up on this story with wht happenes to the marine. I really want to see him et disipline!"

- Cathy

"Thank you, for deciding not to show the appalling video of a dog being mistreated by a marine in Iraq. It would have been even better if you had not shown the marine (lower cap intentional) and the puppy, but I do applaud you for not showing the complete sequence."

- Arthur in Manoa

"please do something about this horrible discusting excuse for a man and see that he is humiliated, court martialed, jail-time,dishonorably dishcharged and anything else that can be imposed on this worthless person.Thank you!"

- Sincerely, Mary in Las Vegas
