go! Airlines Suspends 2 Pilots Under FAA Investigation

FAA Says It Is Investigating Whether Pilots Fell Asleep

POSTED: 1:57 pm HST February 21, 2008

go! Airlines suspended two pilots who overshot a runway in Hilo last week who are under investigation for possibly sleeping.

The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the case.

The go! Flight 1002 took off from Honolulu at 9:20 a.m. on Feb. 13. It was scheduled to land in Hilo at 10:05 a.m., but the plane flew beyond Hilo Airport and was out of contact with air traffic controllers for more than 20 minutes, officials said.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the pilots fall asleep and continued to fly out to sea, or if there was some sort of technical communication problem.

The FAA told KITV that even if the pilots did have a communication problem, normal procedure would be to stick to the flight plan and land the aircraft in Hilo at the appointed time.

"The issue is currently under investigation and we are cooperating fully with the Federal Aviation Administration. Both pilots have been removed from flight duties pending the outcome," a go! Airlines representative said in a written statement.

The cockpit voice recorder might help provide answers as to whether the pilots were asleep or awake.
