For the first time King David Kalakaua's rare gems were on public display on Tuesday at Iolani Palace.

The display was in honor of the 125th anniversary of the king's coronation.

There were three pieces in the exhibit. Two are from Abigail Kawananakoa's private collection: an 11.75-karat diamond pendant and an 18-karat gold necklace holding 10 diamonds.

Kalakaua's coronation ring is on loan from Bishop Museum.

"It's exciting to see pieces like this, plus the size of the diamond is extremely large and the details in jewels in the necklace are incredible. The handwork done to these pieces is extraordinary," gemologist Dale Cripps said.

The gems are said to be priceless because of their historical value. After being displayed they are going back into secure vaults, officials said.
