Police in Portsmouth, Ohio, said a man accused of shooting his wife at an elementary school has been found dead in his home.

The shooting happened early Thursday. Officials said the teacher's husband stabbed and shot her in her classroom in front of students, then fled.

Police said the suspect apparently shot himself after SWAT teams surrounded his house near the school.

No children were hurt in the incident. Cincinnati television station WLWT reported that the teacher, Christi Layne, is in critical condition at a Huntington, W.Va., hospital.

One student said she and other students hid in a coatroom when Layne came in, WLWT reported.

"We heard it all. We heard gunshots and we heard (Christi Layne) yelling," she said. "(When we came out) she was really bloody and she wasn't talking."

Police said the man also stabbed another woman in an alley about five blocks from the school before attacking his wife.

Layne had filed for divorce last month, police said.

Authorities said the Laynes had been separated and that police were involved in a domestic dispute between them about two weeks ago. Layne's attorney said she was afraid such an attack might happen.
