Toys Left For Cyrus To Go OverseasGrandfather OKs Donating Toys To Iraq, AfghanistanPOSTED: 6:07 pm HST January 24,
2008 HONOLULU -- Many Hawaii residents have taken comfort in the freeway memorial for "young Cyrus."Now, children in a "war zone" half-way around the world will also benefit.Dozens of toys were donated to the memory of Cyrus Belt at the overpass from which the toddler was thrown to his death. On Thursday, Iraq War Veteran Staff Sgt. Stacey Norris and her friends are packing up the toys and teddy bears. They will clean and dry them, and then they will send them off to children in hospitals, schools and orphanages in Iraq and Afghanistan.Norris received permission from Cyrus's grandfather, Lilo Asiata, when visiting the memorial on Wednesday night."It was really in his heart that we give them to the children who are young and innocent like baby Cyrus," Norris said.Asiata said it's comforting to think of the toys going in Cyrus memory to children of war with little of their own."I feel for them from day one. They don't need to be in the situation they are in, and my heart goes out to them," Asiata said.Asiata said he is unable to thank the people of Hawaii formally for all they have done to honor Cyrus' memory, but he said he intends to do that later."I am planning on thanking the public for all the support. As you know, right now we look Cyrus as not ours, but he is the people's baby right now because of all the support," Asiata said.He said his own visits to the memorial have helped ease his pain."It is very difficult for me to think that my grandson is not coming back. This boy was my whole life. He would sleep with me. My whole day starts with him -- ends with him," Asiata said. Copyright 2008 by KITV.com All rights reserved.
