Superferry Resumes Service After Rough Seas

Passengers Deal With Inconveniences, Delays

The Hawaii Superferry resumed service to Maui on Sunday after bad weather forced the Hawaii Superferry to suspend service for four days.

Many passengers are still dealing with inconveniences.

John Florence flew from Honolulu to Maui on Sunday afternoon to get his van on the Hawaii Superferry's 2:15 p.m. voyage to O'ahu.

"Oh, it's been such a hassle," Florence said.

Florence, his family and their van took the Superferry to Maui a week ago, where they spent Christmas.

Bad ocean and wind conditions forced the ferry to stop sailing.

"We got e-mails and text messages on the 25th that the voyages had been canceled on the 26th," Florence said.

Florence said he could not wait for the Superferry. He flew his two boys home for other engagements. Florence and the rest of the family waited for the storm to pass.

"On the 27th the ferry was still canceled, so we flew on back. I left my car at Maui International Airport," he said.

After four days, Florence hopped on a Hawaiian Airlines flight to meet the ferry and bring the family van home.

Florence said the experience was a hassle, but he will take the Superferry again.

"I really enjoyed having the van there. I was able to load it up with surfboards and dive stuff, and drive the whole family over," Florence said.

Florence said the Superferry promised to take care of passengers inconvenienced by the cancellations.

"People at the ferry have been good. They have assured me that they'll be taking care of all expenses incurred," he said. "The airfare back and forth, the parking, the taxi from the Honolulu airport to home, food for the one day there and the overnight lodging."

Passengers can go to the Superferry Web site for more information on refunds and reimbursements.
