Everyone knows KITV 4 Sports anchor/reporter Dan Meisenzahl as the fun loving sportscaster who delivers your sports with a touch of comedy.

Here's your chance to find out more about the man who is so much more complex than what is on television.

Dan's a graduate of Kalani High School where he ran cross country. Dan got his degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. In fact, I took a class with Dan. Ethics in Journalism was the title if I remember correctly.

What made you choose sports?

"It's a chance for me to live vicariously through the lives of athletes. That's the short answer."

Dan Meiszensahl and family"The long answer is that I was always interested in current events. I would watch newscasts, read newspapers and Time, Newsweek."

"I was about 22-years-old taking a journalism class at the University of Hawaii, when the instructor said we could do a book report, not watch TV for two weeks or volunteer at Ka Leo, the school's newspaper," Dan said.

He eventually wound up at the paper and wrote about sports events and even had a column.

What get's you hyped up about your job?

"Breaking stories, which are rare in sports. I also like really great interviews and then trying to turn it into a really good story for our viewers. Days when there are like 10 high school football games or it is busy and you get all the stories on with video."

Some days you're on the brink of tears. But sports guys don't cry."

There's no crying in sports?

"No. There's no crying in sports."

Su Shin and Maya Dan is married to wife Su Shin and has a 2-year-old daughter, Maya (pictured, right), and has another child on the way.

Tell me what you love about family time.

"Everything. My greatest moment at work doesn't compare to my most trying moment with my family. I've recently found work is a means to an end and that time with my family is so much more important."

Trust me, Dan is a great family man. A small question about how Maya is doing is sure to set off an update on the latest feats by his daughter. He sincerely enjoys spending time with Su and Maya and speaks with excited anticipation of life with his next child.

They don't know what sex the child is. They want to be surprised. Dan said it's part of the fun.

What kind of interests do you have?

"Family, anything to do with water, (long boarding is the greatest sport ever created), basketball, basically any game."

The current events interest continues. I've had in depth talks with Dan about topics from the Middle East to Capitol politics. He follows some international news stories and angles better than some news people I know.

Dan also enjoys reading.

"I wish I had more time to read. I think there's a limit to how many times you can read 'Green Eggs and Ham.' But I guess not," he said referring to how many times he's read the story to his daughter.

Of the books he's enjoyed he read Harry Potter to see what the hype was about and enjoyed it. He enjoys John Irving novels such as "Cider House Rules" and has finished most Michael Crichton and John Grisham fiction works.

I offered to let him read the newest Crichton book I own. Hopefully it will be a treat from his diet of Dr. Seuss.

Dan's a major movie buff.

Princess Bride"I like historical movies."

Among his favorite movies are: Private Ryan, Silverado, Say Anything, Princess Bride, Stripes, Caddy Shack, Year of Living Dangerously.

As you can see there are many more sides to this complex sportscaster than just highlights and scoreboards.
