Officials: High Tensions To Blame For Continued Delay

The company behind the Superferry announced it is delaying service to Kauai to an unspecified date.

The delay came soon after the company's legal victory on Kauai Friday, but because of the high tensions surrounding the ferry the company said it would delay the service anyway.

Officials said that service was to resume Wednesday, but after protests and a hostile meeting with Gov. Linda Lingle they said the business had no choice.

"We'd rather be in an environment that's conducive to operating a great business. You know there's just too many tensions right now as we saw last night," said John Garibaldi, Superferry president.

Those leading the charge against Superferry on Kauai said they are elated and believe this is a wise decision.

"The emotions are so high against Superferry. Being here without an [environmental impact study] -- people are going to do something to stop it," said Rich Hoeppner.

On Oahu some people can't understand the passion behind the protests on Kauai.

"Well, everyone had their opinion and they have their rights to protest, but personally I think it's silly," said Nancy Bliss, a Laie Resident.

"I feel it's justified but I also feel that the Superferry would also be a really good thing commercially for everybody since it saves on airfare," said Dane Takizawa, of Nuuanu.

Garibaldi said the company wants to start service to the big island as quickly as possible, but the governor's spokesman said the harbor there is not ready.
