Gov. Linda Lingle said she expected a passionate crowd at Thursday night's Superferry meeting on Kauai, but she said she was disappointed by the disrespect she saw throughout the three-hour community meeting.

KITV's Cathernie Cruz reported that the meeting was a night of boos and jeers, and at one point, someone yelled profanity at the governor.

Lingle said she was struck that many in Thursday night's crowd were unwilling to listen. She said they were rude to the speakers and to each other.

"I had never experienced the level of rudeness. It was unlike anything I had ever seen on Kauai, and I don't think anyone felt good about that," Lingle said.

Government officials flew to Kauai to make sure the next time the Superferry docks in Kauai, the following regulations will be followed:
  • Protestors will be given an area to protest.
  • The federal security zone around the ferry will be in place one hour before it goes into harbor and 10 minutes after the ferry leaves.

Officials said the priority is safety -- specifically that of the children. Officials said they do not want children in harm's way.

Lingle stressed her hope that Superferry opponents will not break the law and try to stop commerce.

"There's no doubt there will be more personnel and vessels. I'm not going to give you the details, but it will not be like the first time," Lingle said.

But after Thursday night's hostile crowd, Lingle said she wants to talk with law enforcement before making any change to the ferry schedule.
