The state has started a new program that allows pets to enter the state through Kauai, Maui and Kona in addition to Honolulu.

The new rules allow pets to be released directly from those neighbor island airports as long as owners have all necessary paperwork.

Pets arriving at neighbor island airports must have a special permit and must be inspected at the airport by a veterinarian.

Not all airlines allow pets to fly to islands other than Oahu so pet owners should check with their airlines.
