HONOLULU -- Drug treatment advocates Friday launched a $20,000 campaign in hopes of ending prison overcrowding.
The television commercials feature retired Circuit Court Judge Masato Doi and Dancetta Feary Kamai.
Kamai is the sister of singer Mackey Feary (pictured, left), who killed himself in Halawa Prison three years ago. Feary suffered from depression and was a crystal methamphetamine addict.
"There are many, many more Mackeys locked up and waiting to be locked up. They are our own brothers, sisters, parents, cousins and our friends. If you dont know anybody with a drug problem, don't worry, you will," Kamai said.
Kamai and Doi Friday urged lawmakers to appropriate $4 million for drug treatment for first time non-violent offenders instead of prison.
