University of Hawaii Manoa campus officials on Monday stepped up security and warned students to take preventive measures after a student reported being sexually assaulted and robbed in her dormitory room.

Monday was the first day of school for UH students.

The alleged attack happened early on Sunday morning at the Mokihana Tower.

"The victim reported there was a male in her room. He touched her inappropriately. She yelled, screamed and the male left the room and after contacting us she noticed some of her personal items were missing," UH Manoa Chief of Security Neal Sakamoto said.

The student who reported the assault is from the mainland, officials said. They said that she doing well, and has moved to another dorm room.

Since the assault, university officials said security is tighter around all dorm halls.

"We brought in additional contract security to help watch the common areas for suspicious activities and suspicious people," Sakamoto said.

The added private security will patrol outside the dorms overnight while campus security has stepped up its watch around the clock.

Campus officials reminded students to remain alert and be aware of their surroundings.

"We do have a safe place for people to live, but we can only maintain that safety so far," Residential Life Coordinator Bradley Kane said.

Dorm students must use a key to enter their dorms. Once in the building, the key activates the elevator and opens their rooms.

For freshman Courtney Abe, Sunday's assault has her keeping her guard up.

"Even when we are in our rooms just studying, I know we want to meet people, but we keep our doors closed and locked," Abe said.
