One day before returning to classes for a new semester, a report of a sexual assault and theft in a Manoa dormitory has put the University of Hawaii community on edge.

Security officers patrolled the UH Manoa campus Sunday evening after a student reported being sexually assaulted in her room at Hale Aloha Moki-Hana dormitory at about 6 a.m. Sunday.

University officials said that a man entered the woman's room, threatened her with a pair of scissors and sexually assaulted her. The woman's wallet was also stolen.

Campus security sent out a mass e-mail Sunday afternoon warning students to be on guard.

The incident has left many students on edge.

"It's only been a couple of days, and there's been a sexual assault and a theft," said student Rebecca Fonoimoana. "I don't know, it really freaked me out, especially because it's in my tower."

"I'm scared that maybe the security isn't as well as it should be," said student Kia Atkins.

University officials said the assault and burglary might be connected to a similar burglary that occurred in the same dorm Saturday morning.

Students are being urged to keep alert and report any suspicious people or activities to residence hall staff and campus security.

"I think they need to be aware that there are people out there who don't have their best interests at heart, and to keep their doors locked, and at all times, if they can, to travel at least in pairs," said Sara Mason, a mother of a student on campus.

Honolulu police are investigating, but are also asking people with possible information on the incident to contact Crimestoppers at 808-955-8300.
