State and county offices around Hawaii will be closed on Friday in observance of Statehood Day.

All state and county business offices will be closed while parks and recreation centers, municipal golf courses and the Honolulu Zoo will be open.

On Oahu the People's Open Markets will also be closed and bus service will be on a state holiday schedule.

Refuse pickup will remain on schedule, on-street parking will be free except for meters on Kalakaua Avenue along Kapiolani Park.

On Aug. 21, 1959, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law The Admission Act making Hawaii the 50th state in the United States. It is celebrated every third Friday in August.

Most people remember the holiday as Admissions Day. The state Legislature passed a law in 2003 changing the name to Statehood Day.
