State transportation officials are once again asking for drivers' help to reduce traffic congestion.

They said they learned something very important last week that might help in the future.

State transportation officials said that when it comes to the annual "Beat the School Jam" campaign there is new focus now on the University of Hawaii and getting more college students to take the bus.

The usual big worry for drivers is the first day of public school, but that came and went last week with no big problems on the highways.

Transportation officials said that told them they needed to focus more on the University of Hawaii other Oahu colleges and Honolulu's big private schools.

"Having that many more vehicles in the traffic stream, especially in the condensed and confined areas, is really the reason why we see this problem occur," state Department of Transportation Director Barry Fukunaga said.

However, getting college students onto the bus is a challenge. Many have part-time jobs, parking is only $134 a semester at UH Manoa's campus, or free if you can find a space on the street. Those who do ride busses said it is tough if you don't live close.

"I wish it would go a little bit faster," UH student Amara Eap said.

Even express buses make many stops. An express bus from UH Manoa to Waipahu will take an hour and a half to get to its final destination, according to riders.

The bus company boss agreed that there could be more express in the seven express routes, but that would take city approval and could hurt service to other riders. More than 6,000 students bought a relatively inexpensive UH bus pass for $150 that covers a five-month semester.

"Because it's cheaper than like paying gas everyday," UH student Kimberly Ritchey said.

Without any big changes in driving habits the bulk of back to school traffic will likely hit on the first day for students at UH Manoa on Aug. 20.
