'Octosquid' Not So MysteriousProfessor Says Creature Unnamed Species Of SquidPOSTED: 5:22 pm HST July 12,
2007 HONOLULU -- The creature dubbed the "octosquid" turned out to be not so mysterious after all. The specimen is not half octopus, half squid. Richard Young, who is a professor emeritus of oceanography at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, had been examining the specimen for more than a week. Young said the creature is a species of squid that has been around for thousands of years but has yet to be named. He said it's your typical squid and that its tentacles were probably torn off when it came up the pipeline. The specimen was caught in a filter in one of the Natural Energy Laboratory's deep-sea water pipelines two weeks ago off Keahole Point on the Big Island.Previous Story: Copyright 2007 by TheHawaiiChannel.com All rights reserved.
