Drivers should get ready to see cheaper prices at the pump.

A state tax break on ethanol means the cost of gas will start sliding beginning this Sunday, state officials said.

But as KITV's Denby Fawcett reported, one Oahu gas station chain was revved up Friday -- ready to pass on the savings to its customers as soon as possible.

Aloha Petroleum's president Bob Maynard climbed a ladder Friday to drop the price for regular gas 12 cents per gallon and the prices for both mid-grade and premium gas by 13 cents a gallon.

"We don't want to be late. We want to make sure we get it out there. We have some 80 stations that we have to change, and we are going to start kicking off," Maynard said.

All Hawaii gas stations starting Sunday will be required to drop their prices about 11 to 13 cents a gallon to pass on a tax break they will be getting from the state for selling ethanol blended gas, state officials said.

The tax break was reinstated by the legislature this year.

Some drivers said they have waited all week for the tax break to kick in before they fill up.

Aloha customer Elver Higashi said he's glad he didn't have to wait any longer.

"I didn't know (about the price change). I just happened to be here," Higashi. "I am very happy. The price is so good."

Judy Asmun said she just happened to stop by.

"I am so happy to have some cheaper gas than I expected. It's wonderful," Asmun said.

Randy Park said the price drop makes a difference.

"It's great, you know. It's the way it should be. It's about time," Park said.

The ethanol gas tax break expires in two years, officials said.
