After returning from a trip to Asia, Gov. Linda Lingle had her first chance to defend her chief of staff -- but she chose not to comment.

"Because there is a criminal proceeding going on right now, I am not going to comment on that," said Lingle.

Chief of Staff Bob Awana is allegedly the victim of blackmail over alleged sexual impropriety. He is also under investigation by the FBI over an overseas investment. He denied any improper behavior.

Awana was not present during the governor's lengthy press conference Monday, but Lingle said his status in the office has not changed.

When asked if she still has confidence in Awana, the governor said she wasn’t ready to talk about it.

"I've just gotten back, this is my first day of work and I'll be talking with Bob further about it," said Lingle.
