Tour Bus Driver Indicted In Fatal CrashDriver Refused Blood, Breath Tests After CollisionPOSTED: 6:52 am HST May 23,
2007 HONOLULU -- A Roberts Hawaii tour bus driver on Tuesday was indicted on a manslaughter charge in connection with a deadly collision in Kahaluu that killed a 42-year-old man last year.Corey Voss and his wife were expecting their first child when Voss was killed. Bus driver Steve Oshiro could have prevented the tragedy, prosecutors said.Oshiro's empty tour bus crossed the centerline on Kamehameha Highway and collided with Voss' sport utility vehicle and a house in Kahaluu on June 12, 2006.Voss was returning from surfing when he was killed. Voss left behind a wife who was six months pregnant.Oshiro should not have been driving the tour bus that afternoon, prosecutors said."He had a collision with a city bus earlier that day," deputy prosecutor Vickie Kapp said.Roberts Hawaii confirmed Oshiro was behind the wheel of a tour bus filled with passengers when it bumped the city bus hours earlier near the corner of Beretania and Punahou streets. No one was injured and there was only minor damage to the vehicles.Prosecutors said that crash should have been a red flag for Oshiro."His driving that afternoon was erratic. The suspect should have known that he was unable to operate a vehicle safely," Kapp said.Although Roberts Hawaii did not require Oshiro to take a blood test after the minor crash earlier that day, the company did require one after the fatal collision, KITV reported.Oshiro refused the alcohol breath and blood tests after his arrest. Roberts Hawaii fired him a few days later."We would also note that as a professional driver of an extremely heavy and dangerous vehicle on a two-lane highway, the suspect should be held to a much higher standard of care," Kapp said. The judge set Oshiro's bail at $100,000.If Oshiro is convicted of manslaughter, he could get 20 years in prison. That is 10 years more than he would have gotten if drunken driving was blamed for the fatal collision. Previous Stories:
