The Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander population hit a milestone in 2006 by reaching 1 million, according to new numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Of the 1 million Native Hawaiians and Pacific Islanders, 275,000 live in Hawaii and 260,000 live in California.

While the 275,000 makes the group a minority in Hawaii, 75 percent of the state population is of minority ethnic origin. That is the highest minority percentage of any state.

The percentage of Asians in Hawaii's population is higher than any other state at 56 percent. California is the next highest with 14 percent Asians or 5 million people.
