Fire destroyed a home near Fort Shafter early on Tuesday morning.

The two-alarm fire broke out just before 5 a.m. at 1521 Meyers St. near Middle Street.

Neighbors said they heard popping noises and then saw the fire a short time later. Neighbors said the flames shot above nearby trees at one point.

"The fire was really high. It was almost like 50 feet high," neighbor Matthew Guiocho said.

Ammunition for a .22-caliber gun was exploding in the home when firefighters arrived on scene, according to officials.

Firefighters fought the blaze from the outside and waited until the explosions stopped before going inside.

"I saw some flashes early in the morning and then I heard some loud explosions and then I saw the building on fire," neighbor Frank Olival said.

There were seven people home when the fire broke out.

Paramedics treated a 76-year-old woman and took her to Queen's Medical Center. She was treated for high blood pressure, which she has a history of, according to an Emergency Medical Services spokesman.

Police closed Notley and Meyers streets while firefighters worked to put the flames out.

The fire started in the kitchen, fire officials said.

They said the seven people who lived in the home escaped thanks to a smoke alarm.

Jaime Funtanilla, who does not live in the home, arrived at his family's home and saw the devastation. The family dog named Sar also suffered serious burns on her face.

"My kids live with my mom, and luckily they got out safely," Funtanilla said.

His mother was taken to the hospital for elevated blood pressure and his two adult children went to another hospital for minor burns and smoke inhalation.

Investigators are trying to determine what caused the fire. They estimate that the fire caused $395,000 damage to the home and $150,000 in damage to the contents, including four vehicles.
