Man Must Repay Coast Guard For Phony May-Day Call

POSTED: 3:25 pm HST May 1, 2007

A judge on Tuesday sentenced a 19-year-old man who made up an elaborate story about a sinking boat that sent Coast Guard rescue crews scrambling.

Justin Aquino will repay the Coast Guard thousands of dollars and do 100 hours of community service for the crime.

Aquino used a marine-band radio to call in a phony distress call. He told the Coast Guard he was sailing off Honolulu Harbor and saw another sailboat going down with two people aboard.

The Coast Guard got to the scene and did not find anything.

Aquino was also sentenced to five years probation.
