Man Convicted Of Manoa Robbery, KidnappingProsecutors Want Rodrigues Behind Bars For LifePOSTED: 4:23 p.m. HST March 1, 2002 HONOLULU -- A judge Friday convicted Shaun Rodrigues of robbing a mother and daughter at gunpoint in their Manoa home.
Rodrigues bowed his head after being convicted on charges of robbery, kidnapping and burglary.
Circuit Judge Virginia Crandall sided with prosecutors, who said Rodrigues was the man who broke into a Manoa home, and threatened to remove Diane Sugihara's wedding ring, or cut off her finger.
"She was pleased. She was relieved. The family's happy and they can face closure now," city deputy prosecutor Russell Uehara said.
"These are really the toughest cases, when you know the person is innocent and a decision comes down like this," defense attorney William Harrison said.
During the trial, the defense claimed Rodrigues, who once installed burglar alarms, was wrongly accused.
He faces another trial for terroristic threatening in May.
Rodrigues is scheduled to be sentenced in May. Prosecutors said they want Rodrigues to spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Rodrigues' trial was put on hold as there were further investigations into the burglaries.
Rodrigues is also a reservist in the National Guard and many involved with the trial thought he had been called up to active duty.
Capt. Charles Anthony said there is no record of Rodrigues being on duty during that time.
Rodrigues' attorney called that a misunderstanding.
