HONOLULU -- Republican state lawmakers released a package of bills Monday intended to restrict the state's new traffic camera speeding ticket program.
Several lawmakers spoke at the steps of the Department of Transportation, citing a number of problems with the camera system.
They complained the system targets law-abiding citizens. They call it an invasion of privacy. They also said the tolerances are too low, and the laser system is unproven.
"We are here today as legislators to call upon the Department of Transportation to remove this system. We have a package of bills to limit and restrict how this traffic camera program is being implemented," Rep. Charles Djou (R) said.
The bills are aimed to make the ticket a citation instead of a moving violation and to give control of traffic cameras to the counties.
The lawmakers also proposed raising speed limits.
