State Extends Traffic Camera Warning Period
Camera System Also Faces Legal Questions

HONOLULU -- The state has extended the warning period for photo enforcement citations.
The warning period went into effect Dec. 3 and was expected to end Saturday. However, the time period will be extended until early January.
That's because the transportation department received a huge number of questions from the public.
Camera Enforcement Locations
Thousands of speeders have been caught on the traffic cameras in the short time that the cameras have been in use.
State transportation officials have said that even under the best conditions, cameras inside these traffic enforcement vans may not take recognizable pictures of the drivers. That would make it likely that the drivers will claim someone else was in control of the car when it was photographed speeding.
That issue has raised some questions about how the citations would be enforced.
Some officials have suggested that the citations could be issued like a parking ticket and not placed on a driver's abstract that would affect insurance rates.
