HONOLULU, Hawaii -- Menu Foods is voluntarily recalling foil packaged and canned wet food, after 10 animals died after eating the product. The food is widely distributed in stores including Safeway and Wal-Mart.Stores across the country, including Hawaii, are scrambling to determine if any of the 48 brands of dog food or 41 brands of cat food are still on the shelves.
At the Diamond Head Bark Park dog owners were clearly concerned after hearing the news."His health is very important to me so any long term effects of any dog food is very serious. You don't hear about dog and cat food recalls often, so this one which covers so many different brands is a little alarming," said Graham McNeil.McNeil said he doesn't feed his pet wet food very often, but was anxious to check his stock of food.A Kailua woman whose dog died after eating the cuts and gravy style food is talking to an attorney about suing the company.A Honolulu attorney specializing in pet law said her client's dog, Twinkles, might have been a casualty. She said she is very upset. Her dog died last Sunday under very strange circumstances -- soon after she realized she had feed the dog IAMS premium dog food with a tainted tracking number.Officials said that anyone with an ill pet, or one that has died, and that used any of the recalled brands should contact their veterinarian. The voluntary recall covers wet cat or dog food manufactured between December of last year and March of this year.
