A whale carcass floating off Hilo is attracting sharks and posing a risk to boaters.

The Coast Guard tried to sink the carcass Friday by using a rifle to fire shots into its lungs, but the effort was unsuccessful.

The carcass is floating approximately two miles off shore and is attracting as many as 10 large sharks, officials said.

Winds, however, have shifted to the northwest and officials said it looks like the carcass is now drifting out to sea.
