Exterminators Fumigate Waikiki Shell For TermitesPOSTED: 8:15 am HST March 2,
2007 HONOLULU -- Exterminators have had to use some of their biggest tarps to tent the Waikiki Shell to deal with an infestation of termites.Several large hydraulic lifts were brought in because of the scope of the job.Kama'aina Termite and Pest Control workers installed the canopy. It is not the biggest building the company has fumigated, but it is the most unusual shape, workers said. The shell is 75 feet high and 500,000 cubic feet. The facility is home to some of the most widely-attended concerts each year."Safety is the first issue, and obviously the shape of the shell. It's not your basic house," Kama'aina Termite and Pest Control owner Mike Miske said. The weather was marginal and threatened to cause trouble with the big tarps."Today was very windy, and as you know, these tarps are like big sails. So, if the wind was to come behind and pick it up it could blow the whole thing out," Miske said. The fumigation is set to begin sometime on Friday evening and end on Saturday.
