Officials Look At Solutions For North Shore Flooding

POSTED: 9:04 am HST February 19, 2007

State and city officials spent part of Sunday trying to find a solution to fix a flooding problem on Oahu's north shore.

Officials have determined that the problem originates at Sacred Falls and is compounded during times of heavy rain. Water levels in this stream rise and rush down a destructive path toward homes in the neighboring area. More than 75 residences are affected.

Just last month, heavy rains brought flooding to homes and streets.

On Sunday, Sen. Clayton Hee and staff members from the House of Representatives and the Honolulu City Council toured the area to find a solution.

"We'll look at solutions on how to rechannel the water that has been piling up," Hee said. "It can be avoided if the government would do scheduled monthly or weekly checks."

Hee said he expects that a flood mitigation program will be expensive, but he called it necessary.
