Beware, You May Be On Traffic Camera

Program To Spread To Neighbor Islands Next Year

UPDATED: 7:01 pm HST December 3, 2001

The state launched a program Monday that will mail warning tickets to drivers who are caught speeding or running a red light on camera.

Vineyard and PunchbowlDigital cameras will be placed in 10 intersections around Oahu to check for people who run red lights, while "speed vans" mounted with digital cameras will be parked on highways looking for speeders.

Department of Transportation officials said their goal is to make highways safer, not to issue more tickets in order to raise revenue. However, the American Civil Liberties Union has raised suspicions because the company providing the cameras will get about $30 from each ticket issued.

The first camera was installed at the intersection of Vineyard Boulevard and Punchbowl Street.

Traffic CameraThose who run red lights will be immediately be notified when a bright flashes in front of them. Tickets will be mailed to the vehicle's registered owner within three days.

The warning period will last two weeks. After Dec. 17, tickets with monetary fines will start to be mailed out.
