Snake Found At Hilo Harbor

HONOLULU -- A worker at Hilo Harbor found and killed a snake last week, according to state agricultural officials.It happened at about 9:30 a.m. on Friday at Pier 2.A worker spotted the chequered keelback snake that is commonly found in Asia and the East Indies, according to Department of Agriculture officials. They said the snake is not usually considered a pet type of snake.The snake is a non-venomous water reptile.The remains were flown to Oahu, where a specialist from the Bishop Museum identified the snake.Snakes are illegal in Hawaii. There are no natural predators for the reptiles.Officials are concerned that invasive species can significantly hurt Hawaii's ecosystem.
