A visitor to the islands died on Monday after a bus crashed into his rental car on Kauai.

It happened at about 4:15 p.m. on Kuhio Highway in Hanamaulu shut down the road in both directions between the Kapule Highway Junction and the Kauai Hilton Hotel.

The driver of the rental car, Michael, Caughran, 51, of Alaska, was killed. His two passengers, his wife and son, were taken to Wilcox Hospital, where they were treated and released.

Kauai officials said it appears the driver of the car tried to make a U-turn in front of the Polynesian Tour bus when they collided.

The 60-year-old driver of the bus was traveling alone. He was also treated and released.
