Lt. Watada To Speak About Refusal To Deploy

HONOLULU -- Army Lt. Ehren Watada is scheduled to speak at the Church of the Crossroads on Tuesday night to talk about his refusal to be deployed to Iraq.The Honolulu-born officer faces a court martial in January and could get up to six years in prison and a dishonorable discharge.He is charged with contempt, conduct unbecoming an officer and other offenses for refusing to deploy to Iraq in June when his unit left.Watada said he disobeyed the orders because he believes the war is illegal.He is scheduled to speak at 7 p.m. at the Manoa church.

Watada enlisted in the Army in 2003.His stance prompted rallies of support near Fort Lewis, in Seattle and in Honolulu.
