Thousands To Participate In Sunday's Honolulu Marathon

POSTED: 2:48 pm HST December 8, 2006

Thousands of people will wake up before dawn to participate in the 35th-annual Honolulu Marathon on Sunday, and that means road closures for motorists.

More than 27,000 people have registered for the 26.2-mile run, according to marathon officials.

Starting at 12:30 a.m. on Sunday crews will begin putting up cones to cordon off areas for the runners. There will be lane closures from downtown Honolulu to Hawaii Kai.

The lane closures will also mean that some streets that normally allows for parking will be off limits.

Motorists traveling in the East Honolulu area should expect some delays, more so if you expect to be town-bound.

Organizers hired more than 374 police officers to help with traffic and security issues.

There will be about 10,000 volunteers helping around the marathon route, including at the 10 aid stations.
