A motorcycle officer injured last week while escorting President George W. Bush in the islands died Sunday, police said.

Steve Favela, 30, and two other officers crashed their cycles as the presidential motorcade was traveling across Hickam Air Force Base to meet troops for breakfast early Tuesday. The other officers were treated at The Queen's Medical Center and released.

Favela, an eight-year veteran of the Honolulu Police Department and father of four, had suffered internal injuries and had been listed in critical condition at the medical center.

"I know that Steve was first and foremost a very loving husband a dedicated and great father a loving son and a great sibling. He's going to be missed by everyone," Capt. Frank Fujii said.

Light rain had been falling on the partly cloudy morning, and some roads on the base were slick.

There has been a strong outpouring from the community, police said. Many went to the Blood Bank of Hawaii to donate blood on behalf of Favela.

"The support and the way the community responded to the calls for blood. Many phone calls I received expressing people's good wishes and prayers for Officer Favela was overwhelming. I think it's something that makes Honolulu a very unique place," Fujii said.

Police will wear a black band over their badges in memory of Favela, officials said.
