Blood Drive Will Benefit HPD Police Officer

A Honolulu police officer is spending his fourth night in the hospital.

He was nearly killed Tuesday while escorting President George W. Bush's motorcade.

Friday, for the first time, his family spoke about their ordeal -- and put out a plea for help.

KITV's Jill Kuramoto reported about officer Steve Favela, an eight-year veteran, who crashed his police motorcycle on the rain-soaked road on Hickam while escorting Bush's motorcade.

Two other officers went down avoiding him.

The scene was caught by cameras in the motorcade.

Police said an investigation is still ongoing into what caused the crash.

In the hours and days following, a steady stream of fellow officers have been visiting Favela -- with the president being kept up to date on his condition.

"The Honolulu office of the Secret Service has someone at the hospital with us pretty much throughout the day, and they're in constant contact with the president's office," said Capt. Frank Fujii of the Honolulu Police Department.

"Everybody keeps asking 'how can we help?' and what we really need right now is to call out to everybody to come donate some blood on behalf of Steve," said Barbara Favela, Steve Favela's wife.

Favela apparently suffered a severed artery in one of his legs, which then had to be amputated.

"Steve is blood type O, and we're asking if anyone is blood type O to please go down to any blood bank Hawaii and donate," said Bobbie Favela, Steve Favela's sister-in-law.

Normally closed on Sunday, the Hawaii Blood Bank on Dillingham will be open that day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to accept blood donors of all types.

"It's very humbling, too, for us in the police department to know that when something like this happens to any of our officers, something that makes Honolulu so unique is that the community just rallies around us and supports us," said Fujii.

Steve Favela and his wife have four children -- all under the age of 7.
