Hawaii officials hope that a list of the nine most endangered historic sites in the state will help raise public awareness and inspire the community to take action to preserve the sites.

The state Department of Land and Natural Resources' State Historic Preservation Division and the Historic Hawaii Foundation compiled the list.

This year, one of the endangered sites is a city: Lana`i City.

Hawaii's Most Endangered Historic Sites:
  • Lana`i City
  • The Walker Estate, Nuuanu
  • Sanju Pagoda at Honolulu Memorial Park, Nuuanu
  • Queen Theater in Kaimuki
  • The plantation manager's mansion in `Ewa Villages
  • Koke`e State Park on Kaua`i
  • Gulick-Powell House on Kaua`i
  • Pu`unene Congregational Church on Maui
  • Mapulehu Glass House on Moloka`i
  • Making the list does not protect or preserve the sites. Officials said the list is designed to put the places at the forefront, making people aware of what is happening.
