A San Francisco computer tycoon donated $600,000 to help speed Hawaii's earthquake recovery efforts.

Salesforce.com Chief Executive Officer Marc Benioff owns a 5-acre vacation estate on the Kohala Coast and was there when the earthquake struck.

Gov. Linda Lingle held a news conference to thank him and outline how the money will be used.

"I have known now Marc for several years and this is really from his heart. He loves Hawaii very much. He loves the people of the Big Island," Lingle said.

Where Donation Will Go:
  • $100,000 for repairs to the Kohala Community Hospital and some badly damaged homes in Hawi and Kapa'au
  • $200,000 to the American Red Cross, Hawaii Chapter.
  • $300,000 to the new Hawaii Earthquake Recovery Fund administered by the Hawaii Community Foundation
  • All the money in the new fund will be used to pay for repairs not covered by Red Cross and the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
