FEMA Urges Residents, Businesses With Quake Damage To Register

POSTED: 5:33 pm HST October 24, 2006

The Federal Emergency Management Agency is asking people who need financial help because of the earthquake to register to get federal assistance.

To register with FEMA call 800-621-FEMA or go online at FEMA.gov.

FEMA will be setting up assistance centers on the Big Island.

The U.S. Small Business Administration will be offering low-interest disaster loans to homeowners, renters, and businesses affected by the quake.

Homeowners may be eligible for up to $200,000 to repair or replace damaged or destroyed property. Renters are eligible for up to $40,000.

Kona Community Hospital officials said they expect to be fully operational by Friday after suffering damage from the earthquake on Oct. 15.

Crews spent a week cleaning, replacing ceiling tiles and painting.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency announced that the hospital will be used by FEMA to study how other institutions can minimize earthquake damage.
