The Federal Emergency Management Agency agreed to provide federal relief for individuals, households and businesses on the Big Island who were affected by the Oct. 15 earthquake, Gov. Linda Lingle announced on Monday.

President George W. Bush signed a declaration last week declaring a national disaster clearing the way for federal relief to the state and counties.

FEMA's move allows grants to help pay for temporary housing, home repairs and other disaster-related expenses. It will also provide low-interest loans from the U.S. Small Business Administration for some residential and business losses that are not paid in full by insurance.

FEMA and state Civil Defense officials are expected to announce how Big Island residents and business owners can apply for the grants and loans.
