Visitors in Waikiki spent parts of their vacation in fear and frustration on Sunday when the earthquake knocked out power to Oahu.

Thousands of visitors poured out of hotels and on to the streets of Waikiki after the quake.

Some recalled the deadly Indonesian tsunami of 2004 and realized a powerful earthquake near the ocean could be deadly. Some ran for high ground.

However, many did not get word if there was to be a tsunami or not. A number of people who spoke with KITV said they were frustrated because no one gave them much information.

Some people had trouble getting out of the hotels. The emergency stairwell lights did not work in at least one hotel. At the Outrigger Waikiki, staff passed out glow sticks to help the evacuation.

With Waikiki restaurants closed and power off, people lined up at ABC Stores to get water and snacks. The ABC Stores allowed one or two customers in at a time, by flashlight and checked them out by hand.

Many bought canned goods and other food items in case the power did not come back on in time for dinner.
