Historic Manoa Home Seriously Damaged In QuakePOSTED: 1:21 pm HST October 15,
2006 HONOLULU -- Evidence of the strength of Sunday's earthquake could be seen all the way to Oahu. A house in Manoa sustained serious damage. The owner of a home on Vancouver Drive in Manoa said that the second earthquake caused the stone chimney to give way.The three-story home is a registered historic home built in 1912.The owner, Theresa Wery, described the moment the chimney gave way."I heard this huge noise, which was this thing falling, and all of my family started coming out of the room and I came out here and I could not believe this. And there was smoke everywhere. I guess from the concrete and everything was filled with it, and the rooms are totally dusty with all the stuff," Wery said."That fireplace outside came crashing down from inside here -- our hearth. Smoke and stuff started coming out and I could breathe that. I thought, 'What is that?' It was belching in here and then I looked out the window and there was a cloud of smoke like 9-11. All that concrete turns into dust. So, a mini 9-11, if you will, was outside there," home resident John Zauner said. The homeowner said she had no idea how many tons of concrete came down. But the chimney was three stories tall and extended about 6 feet above the roof. There were several people in the home. No one was hurt. The home had no power or water. An insurance agent was expected to arrive at the home to determine if the building was structurally sound.
