Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann on Tuesday charged Gov. Linda Lingle is "anti-rail."

The mayor held a news conference to talk about his recent trip to Washington, but blasted the governor for questioning the project. He also said federal officials support the project.

The mayor met with federal transportation officials and he said they support the rail system. The mayor said the environmental impact statement is nearly completed and doesn't have any "show stoppers."

But Lingle questioned the funding of the project and whether it should be an elevated rail system. Hannemann had a lot to say to the governor.

"You don't do these kinds of things and know the economy needs the jobs now and say, 'Well, I'm still pro transit.' You're either for it or you're against it and right now she's against it in my opinion," said Hannemann.

The mayor said a state task force has come out in favor of the rail system and wonders why the governor is not fully behind the plan.

"Why, when she has a history of supporting rail, when she needs jobs now and when she is the key person to allowing us to go forward -- why are you blocking this? Do you want to be remembered as the governor who blew the Superferry, threw our educational system in disarray and now throw away the best economic project this state has going for itself," said Hannemann.

The governor's office said Tuesday afternoon Lingle continues to support the transit system but has concerns about the current plan and how to pay for it.

Next up, federal officials will release the environmental impact statement and the governor will have a minimum of 30 days to approve it.
